Pharmacy Appeal – Independent Review Decision

Many residents will be disappointed to learn that the independent NHS review has upheld the decision to refuse the application for a second community pharmacy in Lee-on-the-Solent.

Following concerns raised by our MP, Dame Caroline Dinenage, with the Care Minister, Stephen Kinnock MP, an independent NHS review was ordered. An Oral Hearing was held on 18 June, lasting more than six hours, during which evidence was presented by the applicant, local councillors, the MP and representatives of the Solent View Medical Practice Patient Participation Group (PPG).

The decision, issued on 16 July, concluded that the existing Boots pharmacy in Lee, together with pharmacies in the surrounding area, provides residents with a reasonable choice of pharmaceutical services under the current NHS regulations governing “Unforeseen Benefits” applications.

While this outcome is disappointing for many residents, particularly those who supported the campaign for improved local access, the independent panel indicated that, unless there is a significant change in local circumstances or the distribution of pharmacies, it is unlikely that a future application would reach a different conclusion for some years.

What support is available?
Residents who find it difficult to collect prescriptions or access pharmacy services may wish to consider the following options:

Boots Lee-on-the-Solent Prescription Delivery Service
Boots (023 9255 0252) offers a prescription delivery service for eligible patients, usually those who are housebound, elderly or have mobility difficulties. Patients can also nominate Boots to receive their prescriptions electronically through the NHS Electronic Prescription Service (EPS). Please contact the branch directly to discuss eligibility.

Boots Online Pharmacy
Repeat prescriptions can also be managed through the Boots online pharmacy, offering home delivery or collection from a Boots branch where appropriate.

Pharmacy First
Many common illnesses can now be assessed and treated by a pharmacist without needing a GP appointment. Further information is available on the Solent View Medical Practice website under Your Local Pharmacy.

Although the campaign has not achieved the outcome many residents hoped for, it highlighted the concerns of our community regarding pharmacy access, particularly for older people and those with limited mobility. I would like to thank everyone who supported the campaign, including our MP, local councillors, the applicant, and the many residents who provided evidence and encouragement throughout the process.
